Waitangi Treaty Grounds, 10 kilometers from the hotel, is the historic site of the treaty signing between Maori chiefs and the British crown in 1840. The residence where the signing took place is one of New Zealand s oldest buildings and has been restored to more accurately depict daily life at the time of the treaty signing. The home also includes a treaty museum. Also located on the grounds are a carved Maori meeting house and a ceremonial war canoe.
